Build your personal brand

What does Coca-Cola mean to you? It’s a brand that has stood the test of time … its been consistent and recognisable for over a century. It delivers a refreshing, familiar taste and a boost of energy (whether real or placebo). Is it good for us? Maybe not. Is it a strong brand? Definitely!

Now, let’s talk about your brand. Is it strong, clear, and consistent? Is it evolving with you?

Many people feel uncomfortable thinking of themselves as a ‘brand’, but like it or not, you already have one. Every interaction, email, and social media post shapes how others perceive you. The real question is: Are you intentionally shaping your brand, or are you leaving it to chance?

Being deliberate about your personal brand is especially crucial during career changes. You brand is shaped by your behaviors, reputation, and the way you present yourself—on LinkedIn, your CV, company website, and socials etc. Unlike Coca-Cola, your brand isn’t built around a product; it’s built around you—your personality, values, and achievements. Jeff Bezos captured it well when he said “Your personal brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room.”

Too many professionals miss the opportunity to clearly communicate who they are and what they can do. Instead, they fade into the background, giving the impression they’re not fully invested. It’s time to change that! Life’s too short to be just another name on a recruiter’s maybe pile.

3 Ways to Strengthen Your Personal Brand

  1. Own Your Essential Self
Understand what truly matters to you. What are you great at? What motivates you? Also, recognise what holds you back—perfectionism, people-pleasing, fear of failure? Being self-aware allows you to show up authentically and consistently. People trust those who present themselves genuinely.

ACTION: Identify your top strengths and key behaviors that reflect your values, and one mindset block holding you back. Then, work on overcoming it!

  2. Stand Out
Every story you tell, word you choose, and contribution you make, whether on LinkedIn, in meetings, or on your CV, shapes your professional identity. Take control of your narrative and ensure it reflects who you are and what you offer.

ACTION: Update your LinkedIn profile and CV to highlight your expertise, achievements, and personal values. Let your online presence reflect the real you!

  3. Build and Connect
Your network shapes your career. Be intentional about who you connect with, contribute to conversations that matter, and nurture mutually beneficial relationships. The strongest personal brands are built through genuine connections and adding value to others.

ACTION: Identify three people you genuinely admire and reach out to them, without asking for anything. Instead, offer value in some way and build a meaningful connection.

Your Brand is Built Daily

Your personal brand isn’t something you create overnight—it’s shaped through every interaction over time. But you can start today. Ask yourself: What’s one action I can take right now to positively influence how the world sees me?

Go ahead—define, refine, and own your personal brand. The world is watching, and you have the power to shape what they see.
