Work-life balance is the old way. Whole life presence is the new.

Work is part of your life, not separate from it. Yet, we talk about work-life balance as if work is something to endure until we reach the ‘real’ parts of life - on weekends, holidays, or when we sleep.

But work shapes your energy, mindset, and well-being every single day. An estimated 90,000 hours of it, or one-third of your existence! That’s too long to be waiting for life to begin.

I think we’ve inherited an outdated mindset that tells us that work is meant to be hard, that if you can tough it out and build resilience you will be rewarded, even if that involves toxic workplaces, poor leadership, limited growth opportunities and results in you feeling increasingly negative about yourself. Sometimes people can’t find alternatives, or are financially constrained, but I also meet plenty of people who stick with roles when they could leave them, afraid of making changes, hoping it will get better or so low on confidence and self-esteem that they doubt themselves.

Work doesn’t need to drain your life force though - work can give you more.

In Buddhism, work is seen as a way to contribute to the world while staying aligned with ethics, well-being, and spiritual growth. The Buddha taught that work should support balance, integrity, and presence.

Ask yourself:

What supports your well-being? What values drive you? How do you best contribute and grow? How can you be more present and aware in your role?

We can move past inherited notions of success connected to busyness, status, and salary and strive for the good lives we can imagine - on our own terms. Because you deserve more. You deserve:

🤎 A role that energises you, where your unique contributions are valued.

🤎 A workplace where communication flows, where ideas are shared, questions welcomed, and mistakes seen as learning opportunities.

🤎 A culture where you feel safe and respected, not anxious or depleted.

You might be thinking, ‘that sounds great, but what if my workplace isn’t like that’? The truth is, not every workplace will change overnight. But you still have the power to shift your experience, starting with how you approach your work. Even in a crappy environment, small changes in how you engage with your role can make a big difference in your energy, mindset, and fulfillment.

So, how can you reshape things and bring more life into your work?

Identify what energises you. Notice which tasks or interactions make you feel engaged, creative, or alive. Can you do more of that, just a little? Small shifts can change the feel of your entire day.

Bring mindfulness into your work. Slow down when you can. Be fully present, whether writing an email or listening in a meeting. Focus on your breath when things affect you negatively.

Redefine success on your terms. What does fulfilment look like to you? Not your boss. Not society. You.

Make space for connection, creativity, and nature, even during work. Step away. Take a walk. Breathe. Go outside. Have lunch with a colleague. Creativity and problem-solving flourish when you have mental space.

Start each day intentionally. Spend two minutes in the morning setting an intention for how you will show up today, what will you do to protect your energy and restore your life force?

You don’t need to escape work to enjoy life. You can bring more life into your work.
